Hirsch· γεννήθηκε στις 20 Ιανουαρίου του 1950 στο Σικάγο των ΗΠΑ· σπούδασε στο Πανεπιστήμιο της Πενσυλβάνια, απ’ όπου έλαβε διδακτορικό δίπλωμα στη λαογραφία· εργάστηκε στo Wayne State University ως καθηγητής αγγλικής γλώσσας· δίδαξε μαθήματα δημιουργικής γραφής στο Πανεπιστήμιο του Χιούστον· πρόεδρος του Ιδρύματος John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation· πρύτανης της Ακαδημίας Αμερικανών ποιητών· έχει γράψει δέκα ποιητικές συλλογές κι έξι βιβλία πεζογραφίας, ενώ έχει ασχοληθεί με την ανθολόγηση και την επιμέλεια βιβλίων) .
